ST. PIUS X HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULES HEART EXAMS

Dear Parent or Guardian,

 

Because it is tragic of course when we hear about a student-athlete falling victim to Sudden Cardiac Death,  St. Pius X High is making this potentially life saving exam available for the 12th consecutive year.

 

Smart Heart Scans was developed in 2002 in response to the growing concern regarding high school athletes falling victim to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), also known as the enlarged heart – the number one cause of SCD among athletes. This test, when conducted in a private facility can cost as much as $750 or more and is usually not covered by insurance due to the fact that these are thought to be healthy teen athletes.

 

On Saturday, August 16th, starting at 8:30 AM,  St. Piux X athletes  have the opportunity to participate in SMART HEART SCANS for athletes, a program instituted by BESTT for U.S. Inc., a non-profit company.

 

SMART HEART SCANS for athletes brings a mobile ultrasound unit  for the day to conduct the simple 8-minute test known as an echocardiogram, which can detect HCM.  Through BESTT for U.S., Inc., the SMART HEART SCANS for athletes test costs only $80.  Costs are kept down due to the volume of participants and the fact that the test is looking specifically for HCM, as opposed to the broad battery of tests that would be conducted on older patients in a hospital setting.

 

According to the American Heart Association, 3% to 4% of us are born with a congenital heart defect. All tests will be reviewed by a cardiologist within 5 – 7 working days of the screening date, depending on the total number of screenings that day.  Any test that is deemed to reveal serious abnormalities will result in parents being contacted by the cardiologist, immediately.

 

The test is voluntary on the part of the students and their parents.  A review:
