DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois tailback Thomas Hammock won't play football again after doctors found an enlarged muscle mass near the left side of his heart.
"It is in my best interests not to play football anymore," Hammock said Monday. "This is a long-term situation versus a short-term situation. I am not willing to jeopardize my future."
Hammock rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in Northern Illinois' season opener against Wake Forest before leaving with breathing problems and chest discomfort. He didn't play again in 2002.
The two-year captain rushed for more than 2,400 yards during his career. | |
